Biography

Karolis Matulis, a Principal at WilkinGuttenplan, has been with the firm since 2013. He leads the firm’s Innovation Council and is currently the Chair of the Emerging Technology Group at the NJCPA.

Karolis uses his deep technical knowledge of taxation, with a focus on partnerships, and his domain expertise in real estate to help clients solve problems and optimize financial outcomes. He advises clients through every phase of their business lifecycle, from inception and growth to maturity and succession. By leveraging his expertise in partnership taxation, Karolis helps clients identify opportunities for tax efficiency and structuring. Additionally, his valuation expertise provides a strategic perspective on understanding the true worth of a business. This, combined with his ability to assess potential tax implications, enables clients to navigate complex transitions or sales in a way that aligns with their financial goals, minimizes tax burdens, and maximizes value.

Beyond traditional finance and taxation, Karolis leverages his expertise in emerging technologies to uncover operational efficiencies for clients. He has a proven track record in designing data analytics solutions, implementing process automation, and leveraging data insights to improve business performance. What motivates you?

My primary motivation is assisting business leaders in reaching their full potential. I am driven by the challenge of converting complex information into actionable insights and strategies, while identifying opportunities that generate value. Seeing businesses grow, adapt, and achieve new levels of success fuels my passion for what I do every day.

What excites you most about the future of your industry?

The rapid change and automation in our industry is exciting. As a profession we are increasingly able to rise above the mundane and provide better strategic support for our clients.

What advice would you give to the next generation of CPAs and Advisors?

The role of a CPA in the future will differ from that of today. You have the opportunity to shape your career to your aspirations by continuing to learn and develop your skills.
